Filipina kickboxer Zyra Bon-as opened up about the toughest battle she faced en route to her gold medal run in the ongoing 33rd Southeast Asian Games.

Bon-as clinched the women’s 48kg low kick gold after edging Thailand’s home bet Jantakarn Manoban via split decision, 2-1, this past Tuesday at the John Paul II Sports Center in Thailand.

But for the 24-year-old Baguio native, it wasn’t just the Thai Muay Thai champion standing across her that tested her the most.

"During my final fight, my toughest opponent was really the nervousness. My opponent was from the host country and is a Muay Thai champion,” Bon-as shared in Filipino.

“That’s why I strengthened my mind so that my heart would follow, and I trusted my coaches and teammates. Most importantly, I put my faith in God."

With the win, Bon-As captured the Philippines’ first-ever SEA Games kickboxing gold. Meanwhile, fellow Filipino Whinny Bayawon settled for silver after competing in the men’s 57kg light kick final.
