New details have emerged surrounding the altercation that led to Dennis Schröder’s suspension, with NBA insider Shams Charania outlining a prolonged buildup between the two guards.
Speaking during a live broadcast, Charania said Luka Dončić repeatedly taunted Schröder over multiple games, allegedly using the B-word, with the exchanges dating back to the offseason. “My understanding is Luka Dončić has been calling him the B-word for the last few games, even going back to the offseason,” Charania said.
The NBA on Tuesday suspended Schröder without pay for three games for attempting to fight a player following the Sacramento Kings’ loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Dec. 29. The incident occurred roughly 40 minutes after the game, when Schröder sought out a player in a corridor inside the Lakers’ arena.
Reporter Chris Haynes later identified the player as Dončić, citing sources who said Schröder specifically went looking for the Lakers star in the arena tunnel.
Tensions between Dončić and Schröder were visible during the game, as the two exchanged heated words on the court. Their rivalry, however, stretches back further. Dončić previously mocked Schröder for declining a reported four-year, $84 million contract offer from the Lakers, prompting Schröder to fire back at the time: “I’m gonna bust your ass.”
The league’s suspension underscores the NBA’s stance on postgame confrontations, while the revelations add context to one of the season’s most contentious player feuds.
