Alex Eala believes the Philippine Women’s Open (PWO) will be a great experience for the growing tennis community in the country.

Eala relishes her first-ever home tournament when she takes on Russia’s Alina Charaeva in the round of 32 on Monday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

“It’s amazing to see this community rally behind me,” Eala said. “This support helped make milestones like a home tournament possible. I’m thankful to everyone who has supported my journey, big or small.”

Filipino fans also turned out in large numbers at the Australian Open, filling Court 6 during Eala’s opening-round match against American Alycia Parks.

The crowd, however, was called out by the umpire several times due to their noise during rallies.

The 20-year-old Eala said that the Philippines’ first Women’s Tennis Association 125 tournament will be a great experience for the Filipino fans, who are still learning the sport.

“My advice is to enjoy it and be respectful to the players,” she said. “This doesn’t happen often here. If people keep an open mind and take in the experience, that’s the best thing they can do.”

Eala added that the Philippine Women’s Open will change the landscape of her sport at home with other Filipinos competing and the supporters witnessing world-class talents.

“For Filipina players, especially the juniors, this is a great chance to be exposed to this level of competition. The draw is filled with very experienced players, and that’s something you learn a lot from,” Eala said.

“Having a tournament like this brings strong competition and more exposure. With people seeing that environment, interest will grow in a natural way.”
