Chito Victolero will be coming home as he was tasked to lead Mapua University in Season 102 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball tournament later this year.
A champion mentor in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) with the Magnolia Hotshots, Victolero will now look to steer the Cardinals back to the title following a disappointing quarterfinal exit in Season 101.
His homecoming comes after the departure of former head coach Randy Alcantara, who left the team earlier this year. He will also have to deal with the exit of Mapua star Clint Escamis, who exhausted his collegiate eligibility at the end of last season.
During his previous stint as Mapua’s head coach from 2009 to 2012, Victolero led the Cardinals to a lone Final Four appearance. This time, however, the Intramuros-based squad appears to be in a stronger position with young standouts EJ Sapasap and Yam Concepcion expected to lead the charge.
Mapua considered candidates from both the professional and collegiate ranks with Victolero getting the nod over Jack Santiago in the final selection.
