The Philippine women's football team trailed 1-0 against Australia in its opening game in the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup on Sunday, March 1 at the Perth Stadium.
The host team dictated the tempo through the first 45 minutes of the contest but the Filipinas stood firm on the defensive end.
The Matildas dominated the possessions and the pressure on the Filipinas finally paid off with Sam Kerr heading home a feed from Caitlin Foord at the far post at the 14th minute.
The Filipinas struggled on getting the ball to their side of the field and never really had a clear shot at the goal through the first half.
On the other hand, the Aussies were relentless as they once had another shot after a quick counter attack from Hayley Raso.
She beat Olivia McDaniel for a 29th minute goal which was later on nullified by a VAR check. Raso was called for an offside as the Filipinas dodged a huge bullet.
McDaniel also made a great save in the 40th minute, denying Stephanie Catley from scoring a free-kick goal to keep the Filipinas in the match.
