The Philippine women’s national football team opened its campaign in the 2026 AFC Asian Women’s Cup with a narrow defeat, losing 0-1 to host nation Australia last Sunday at Perth Stadium. The Matildas grabbed all three points thanks to captain Sam Kerr, who scored the game’s lone goal in the 14th minute.

Not all is lost for the Filipinas, who need to finish either second in Group A or become one of the best third-placed teams in the tournament to reach the knockout stage. For that to materialize, they will need to get positive results in their remaining games against South Korea and Iran to advance to the quarterfinals.

As it stands, the Filipinas are at the bottom of Group A with no points scored and a goal difference of -1. They will next face Korea Republic on Thursday, March 5, at Gold Coast Stadium. The South Koreans will open their campaign on Monday against Iran.

The four quarterfinal winners in this year’s Asian Cup will qualify directly for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.
