Victor Wembanyama put on a show in front of San Antonio legends David Robinson and Tim Duncan, setting multiple records in his playoff debut against the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday (PH time).

Alta Sports compares the Frenchman’s historic performance in Game 1 against Portland to Robinson and Duncan’s first playoff games with San Antonio.

Wemby lives up to the hype in playoff debut

Wembanyama entered the record books in his first-ever playoff game for San Antonio, dropping 35 points in the Spurs’ 111-98 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. He made history with that offensive production as he surpassed Duncan for the most points in a Spurs playoff debut.

The Frenchman also had five rebounds, two blocks, and one assist in 33 minutes of action. He shot 13-of-21 from the field, including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. He also shot 4-of-5 from the free-throw line.

Wembanyama did most of his damage in the first half, scoring 21 points in the first two quarters. It was the best scoring first half of a postseason debut in the play-by-play era in the NBA.

Duncan sets franchise scoring record in postseason debut

Duncan dominated in his first-ever postseason game for the Spurs, posting a double-double in San Antonio’s 102-96 victory over Phoenix last April 23, 1998. He established a new franchise record for points scored in a playoff debut, dropping 32 markers on 12-for-21 shooting against the Suns.

Duncan also had 10 rebounds, two blocks, one assist, and one steal in the series opener. San Antonio went on to win that best-of-five series against Phoenix 3-1.

Robinson scores 26 in playoff debut

Robinson finally arrived on the playoff stage on April 26, 1990, when the Spurs faced the Nuggets in Game 1 of their best-of-five series. The Admiral stuffed the stat sheet against Denver, amassing 26 points, 13 rebounds, 5 blocks, two assists, and one steal to lead San Antonio to a 119-103 victory.

The Spurs went on to beat the Nuggets 3-0 in that first-round series. Robinson played a huge role in that one-sided result, averaging 27.7 points and 13.7 rebounds in the three-game sweep.
