The 2026 NBA Draft Lottery could end up reshaping the league for years to come.
With a loaded draft class headlined by prospects such as AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cameron Boozer, and Caleb Wilson, Sunday’s results carried enormous stakes for rebuilding franchises hoping to secure a future superstar.
Some teams walked away with renewed hope. Others were left wondering if things will ever truly improve.
Winner: Washington Wizards
After years of losing, the Wizards finally caught a break.
Washington secured the No. 1 overall pick for the first time since drafting John Wall in 2010, giving the franchise a potential centerpiece to build around.
The timing could not be better as the Wizards have already assembled an intriguing young core featuring Alex Sarr, Bilal Coulibaly, Tre Johnson, Bub Carrington, and Kyshawn George.
Adding a potential franchise-changing talent now gives the Wizards something they have lacked for years: direction.
The organization also gains flexibility with veterans Anthony Davis and Trae Young, who no longer need to accelerate the rebuild timeline.
Loser: Brooklyn Nets
The Nets entered the lottery hoping their aggressive gamble from two years ago would finally pay off. Instead, they once again missed out on the top four and now face an uncertain future.
Brooklyn traded significant draft capital just to regain control of its own picks, but the returns have been underwhelming. Falling to No. 6 in such a top-heavy draft is a brutal outcome for a team desperately searching for a future star.
The Nets still have promising pieces and respected head coach Jordi Fernandez, but right now, their rebuild feels stuck in limbo.
Winner: Utah Jazz
After shameless tanking and heavy criticism throughout the season, the Jazz finally got rewarded.
Utah landed the No. 2 overall pick, pairing another elite young prospect with a roster that may already be ready to compete sooner rather than later.
The Jazz already features an intriguing core led by Lauri Markkanen, Jaren Jackson Jr., Walker Kessler, Ace Bailey, and Keyonte George.
Now they add another potential superstar to the mix.
The Jazz spent years collecting assets and enduring criticism for obvious tanking tactics. This year’s draft may have finally made all of it worth it.
Loser: Sacramento Kings
The Kings once again fell backward in the lottery and will pick seventh after another miserable season.
For a franchise that has missed the playoffs in 19 of the last 20 seasons, the lottery represented one of the few remaining paths toward relevance. Instead, Sacramento watched several teams leapfrog them yet again.
What makes the result even more painful is the timing. Lottery reform is expected soon, meaning teams at the bottom of the standings will no longer receive the same benefits they once did.
To make matters worse, unlike some rebuilding teams, Sacramento does not have a loaded young core to soften the blow.
Winner: Memphis Grizzlies
The Grizzlies may have pulled off one of the biggest wins of the entire lottery.
Memphis is entering a new era after pivoting away from the core built around Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Desmond Bane.
Landing a top-three pick now gives the franchise a massive head start in building its next contender.
The Grizzlies already own multiple future first-round picks and several intriguing young pieces, including Cedric Coward and Walter Clayton Jr..
For a team trying to quickly reset its future, this lottery could not have gone much better.
Winner: Chicago Bulls
The Bulls finally committed to a rebuild and were immediately rewarded for it.
Chicago jumped into the top four despite entering the lottery with only the ninth-best odds.
That is a massive victory for a franchise that spent years stuck in mediocrity without a clear long-term plan.
Now, the Bulls suddenly have a chance to draft a foundational player while making their coaching vacancy significantly more attractive.
Winner: Los Angeles Clippers
The Clippers’ future looked bleak less than a year ago. Now, things suddenly appear much brighter.
By acquiring Darius Garland and securing a top-five pick through Indiana, the Clippers managed to inject youth and long-term upside into a roster that badly needed it.
This was a franchise that seemed trapped between an aging core and a future with very limited draft assets.
Instead, the Clippers now possess flexibility, young talent, and another premium pick in one of the strongest draft classes in years.
Loser: Indiana Pacers
The Pacers rolled the dice and lost.
Indiana traded away its lottery pick protections as part of the deal for Ivica Zubac, hoping to remain competitive while still keeping a chance at a premium draft selection.
However, the pick conveyed instead.
The Pacers should still remain competitive next season with Tyrese Haliburton and Pascal Siakam leading the way, but losing out on a rare opportunity to add a blue-chip young prospect is painful.
