Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has defeated Nikola Jokić and Victor Wembanyama to become the 14th player in NBA history to win back-to-back MVP awards. He is also the fifth active player to achieve the feat, joining LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Nikola Jokić.
The official media voting results have been released, with the breakdown as follows:
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: 83 first-place votes, 13 second-place votes, 3 third-place votes, 1 fourth-place vote, 0 fifth-place votes — 939 total points
Nikola Jokić: 10 first-place votes, 48 second-place votes, 37 third-place votes, 4 fourth-place votes, 1 fifth-place vote — 634 total points
Victor Wembanyama: 5 first-place votes, 36 second-place votes, 47 third-place votes, 10 fourth-place votes, 2 fifth-place votes — 569 total points
This marks the eighth consecutive year that an international player has won the regular-season MVP award. The last American-born player to win the award was James Harden in 2018. With all three finalists once again hailing from overseas, it remains an open question which American player might eventually break the international stranglehold on the league's top individual honor.
