In Game 5 of the NBA Finals, the San Antonio Spurs fell to the New York Knicks 94-90, losing the series 4-1 and falling just short of a championship.
Despite the loss, Spurs rookie Dylan Harper — the No. 2 overall pick in this year's draft — delivered an impressive performance and proved his worth on the biggest stage.
Harper was sharp from the opening tip, going 3-for-3 for 7 points in the first quarter as the Spurs sprinted to a 23-13 lead. After the Knicks chipped away at the deficit in the second quarter, Harper stepped up again in the third. He scored 9 consecutive points, pushing San Antonio's lead back to 15 while making an impact on both ends of the floor. He even delivered a block on Jordan Clarkson in what became known as the "Philippines Civil War." Harper finished the third quarter with 10 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists.
In the fourth quarter, as the Knicks mounted a furious comeback and the Spurs went cold, Harper knocked down a critical mid-range jumper with 1:16 remaining to tie the game at 88. However, due to fatigue and inexperience, he missed two free throws with 8.5 seconds left, and the Spurs ultimately fell just short.
Still, the performance only added to Harper's growing legacy. He finished the game with a team-high 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists on 10-of-19 shooting (2-of-4 from three, 3-of-6 from the line). Harper became the first rookie since Phoenix Suns forward Richard Dumas in 1993 — a span of 33 years — to record multiple 20-point games in the NBA Finals.
