Alex Eala will resume her campaign at the 2026 Italian Open on Sunday, with the Filipina tennis star set to face World No. 2 Elena Rybakina in the third round at Foro Italico in Rome.
This will be the first-ever meeting between Eala and the two-time Grand Slam champion on the WTA Tour. Eala booked her place in the round of 32 after beating No. 31 seed Xinyu Wang in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
The Quezon City native erased an early 0-3 deficit in the first set against Wang to reach the third round of a WTA 1000 clay event for the first time in her career. Eala won 26 receiving points and converted five of her seven break-point opportunities against the Chinese star.
It won’t get any easier for Eala against Rybakina, who has a 27-6 record this season. The second seed has won two titles this year, capturing the Australian Open and the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart.
Rybakina sealed a showdown with Eala after defeating Maria Sakkari 6-4, 6-1 in the round of 64.
